Eric Loewen, president of the American Nuclear Society, continued his ambitious schedule of local section presentations as he visited ANS sections in Chicago, Ill., on May 16 and Washington, DC, on May 17. Loewen, the featured speaker at the meetings, presented his personal talk in Chicago titled “Going Forward with Nuclear Technology.” In DC, his personal talk was titled “The USS Seawolf Sodium-Cooled Reactor Submarine.”
“ANS president Dr. Eric Loewen’s lecture turned into a performance engaging the local Chicago members about speaking to the public on nuclear,” said Natalie Zaczek, chair of the Chicago local section. ”The presentation also featured a discussion on leadership in the future of nuclear. It was one of the most entertaining and memorable local section meetings.”
Dr. John Madell was present at the meeting to receive a gold certificate for 50 years of National ANS membership. Dr. Madell joined ANS April 6, 1962, and joined Mr. John S. Loomis, Jr., Dr. William T. Sha, Mr. Waldemar B. Seefeldt, and Mr. Norman M. Levitz as 50 year gold certificate national ANS members this year in the Chicago local section.
“It was an honor to have a Chicago local section member receive a membership award by the ANS president in person, recognizing 50 years as a National ANS member,” said Zaczek. “Dr. John Madell has been a dedicated local section member. He most recently reached out to high school students at [a] LaGrange [Ill.] high school career day to encourage them to pursue engineering and careers in nuclear technology.”
